What Shoe Brand Should You Workout In?

When selecting a workout shoe, there are multiple things to consider. For example: What style of workout will it be? What is the anatomy of your foot? What is the frequency of your workouts? Can you benefit from lacing your shoes differently? Before we list our preferred list of shoe brands, let’s talk more about these considerations.

FOOT ANATOMY

Your foot anatomy is one of the most important considerations when purchasing new shoes. Select a shoe that benefits your foot type: flat, neutral, high arch or very high arch. You also will want to think about if you have a high instep (top of your foot). When you have a high instep, you will want to stay away from shoes that compact the top of your foot. This can cause numbness to the foot.

WORKOUT STYLE

Weightlifting shoes are built much different than your running shoes. Weightlifting shoes should increase stability and are typically more flat to the ground. Obviously, you will want a shoe that promotes stability when lifting very heavy objects & weights.

Running shoes are designed to provide traction , support your feet & falling foot arches in long distance runs and handle the impact of your bodyweight while running.

When purchasing, you will may want to consider buying a weightlifting shoe & running shoe for optimal performance.

FREQUENCY

How often do you workout & for how long? If you run less than 5 miles a week, you may not need to focus on the durability of the shoe but instead focus on the fit & comfort. If you are running long distances (>20 miles a week), durability is definitely something you will want to consider.

LACING TECHNIQUES

Many may not know about lacing techniques but it is a great way to better fit a shoe to your foot.

  • If you experience heel slippage, lock lacing will help.
  • If you prefer a secure fit shoe, loop lacing lock is for you!
  • If you have a high instep, the high-instep lacing is beneficial for you. My foot used to go numb during long runs until I made this change! It is a game changer!
  • If you have a wide foot, you will want to 1) purchase wide shoes and 2) to the wide forefoot lacing!
